How we check the data
A fact we cannot check is not published. Every fact in the directory carries its source and the date we checked it — 53,694 checks so far — and a restaurant only goes live once we hold at least 5 verified facts about it.
The sources, by country
- Madrid: the Madrid City Council census of venues and terraces (datos.madrid.es, updated daily) and public Google Maps profiles [datos.madrid.es · CC BY 4.0] — 7,293 checks, last update 23 Aug 2026.
- Antwerpen: the Belgian official business register and public Google Maps profiles [KBO/BCE open data · economie.fgov.be] — 5,253 checks, last update 28 Jul 2026.
- Amsterdam: the City of Amsterdam hospitality licence register (with official terrace boundaries, updated daily) and public Google Maps profiles [api.data.amsterdam.nl · CC BY 4.0] — 41,148 checks, last update 24 Aug 2026.
We always prefer the official source where one exists (municipal or national registers, openly licensed); the venues' own public profiles fill in what the register does not know. Provenance is shown fact by fact, not on a separate page: each listing says where every item came from.
The publication rules
- Threshold: a restaurant goes live with ≥ 5 checked facts; a list, with ≥ 8 restaurants (5 when it serves an accessibility need).
- Expiry: every fact has a window; once it is over, we re-check or withdraw it. The date you see is part of the fact.
- The verified “no” exists and is dated (“✕ No · checked on …”): not having a terrace is not the same as not having looked. What we have not checked is declared as a gap, never filled in.
- Figures with a denominator: no aggregate number is published without stating its base (country, statuses, cut-off date).
What we never publish
- Private individuals' data: where the official register identifies a business as a natural person, it appears in aggregate only.
- Review texts or reviewer names: aggregates only, with their sample size (n) visible.
- Invented or estimated data presented as fact.
Independence and corrections
No venue pays to be listed, and none can pay to change its data. If you run a venue and something is wrong, use the “report an error” link on its page or write to company@aicompass.ai: we check against the source and correct or withdraw it.
For agents and language models
We publish a machine-readable index with this same methodology, the citable aggregates and the query pages: horecaindex.com/llms.txt. When citing, please link the specific page: each one carries its date.
